Scholarships? Where do I even get started…

What’s The First Step?

They say the hardest step is the first one, but not when it comes to scholarships.  Truth be told, taking this first step is simply looking at yourself in a different light and creating your own “personal inventory”.  We all have many identifying factors about us that make us unique just for being who we are and  the secret is creating this list first!  The purpose of the list is to help make sure that you understand yourself.  This will come in very handy when filling out information with some of the powerful scholarship search engines out there, searching yourself on Google or this site and filling out a scholarship application.

Create a Personal Inventory

A “personal inventory” is essentially a list that includes everything about you that can be used in finding a scholarship.  To get you started we have included some ideas below, but even this long list is very limited.  Get creative and think about what makes you….you! Often times that is what will lead you to a less competitive scholarship to apply for.

  • Unique life experiences/hardships
    • Single Mom/Dad
    • Live or lived in poverty
    • Raise a children(s) with a disability
  • Medical and/or physical conditions
  • Heritage
  • Work experience
  • Professional associations
    • Union member
    • Boy/Girl scouts
  • Volunteer work
  • Community involvement
  • Degree program
  • Intended career
  • Academic achievements
  • G.P.A.
  • Goals
  • Family Background
  • Religious affiliation.
  • Memberships
  • Military affiliation
  • Hobbies

Now that you have a good list of ideas to pull from, get started! Dont let the first step stop you!  Once you have your list created you can now go out and fill out those scholarship search sites with confidence, explore the industries and organizations that you are affiliated with, and/or those organizations that share the same traits that you have listed.

This personal inventory list should be a live document, so continue to keep it updated as you move forward with life, school and graduation!
